Belly Binding

After a vaginal birth or a cesarean birth

You’ve expanded, physically and emotionally, beyond your wildest dreams. You’ve transformed during birth, and now you’re holding your baby’s needs above your own much of the time. What would it be like to feel physically held and contained during this time?

Belly binding is a traditional postpartum practice, used in cultures around the world for centuries, that gently supports the abdomen, hips, and lower back using a long cotton cloth wrapped around the body to offer physical support and compression to the abdominal muscles, pelvic floor, and organs as they shift back into their pre-preganancy positions.

At Deep Well Doulas Hudson Valley, belly binding is offered as part of a holistic approach to postpartum care. Rather than focusing on “getting your body back,” this practice honors the remarkable body you have now and the transition into motherhood. I view belly binding as one piece of a thoughtful postpartum recovery plan. Your body deserves kindness, nourishment, and time to heal at its own pace.

Many people choose belly binding after both vaginal and cesarean births. If you’ve had a cesarean birth, we will wait until your incision has healed enough and your provider has cleared you before beginning.

What are the benefits of belly binding?

Every postpartum experience is unique, but many mothers find that belly binding helps them feel more supported and comfortable during the early weeks after birth.

Potential benefits include:

  • Gentle support for abdominal muscles as they recover

  • Increased comfort while feeding, carrying, and caring for your baby

  • Support for the lower back and pelvis

  • A greater sense of stability during everyday movements

  • Increased awareness of posture and body mechanics

  • Warmth and comfort during recovery

  • A calming ritual that encourages rest and self-care

What happens during a belly binding session?

During your session, I’ll help you learn how to safely and comfortably wear a traditional postpartum bind. After reflecting on your birth and recovery journey and assessing your comfort and healing, we begin with a tea and healthy snack, and either a foot soak or sit bath. Then we continue with a gentle, warming abdominal massage using oils to nourish and ready your tissues and womb.
